GM plan to start selling
their electric car, the aptly named Chevrolet Volt, in 2010. The Volt will be
recharged from a ‘standard home wall outlet’ according to releases from the
company, and each charge will allow the car to travel about 40 miles, while a ‘small
gasoline engine’ will recharge the batteries on longer trips. Miles per ‘gallon’
don’t really apply to the electric car but GM still claim the Volt will get the
equivalent of 150 m.p.g.
Even with the ‘electrifying’
pace of modern technology, the weight of the battery pack is still a major
concern, as is the method of keeping it cool, but GM are confident any remaining
issues such as these will be overcome in time for the Volt’s launch. We
compliment GM on this venture and will be watching it with interest.
