Safety enhancements arrived for the 2000 models, including an emergency escape release inside the trunk, rear child-seat anchors, and Belt Minder (a chime and warning light to encourage buckling-up). Those changes also went into other Ford products.

The Town Car gains a revised power-steering system designed to provide more feel, but loses some standard features that help hold down prices, especially on the base Executive and Signature Series models. Both cars return for 1997 without a dual exhaust system, resulting in a loss of 20 horsepower. Power from the standard 4.6-liter V8 drops from 210 to 190.

The Town Car sedan has a completely redesigned interior and exterior for 1998. The exterior length is now 3.6 inches shorter than last year. The Town Car has been re-engineered which includes improvements to the chassis and suspension. These improvements include Watts linkage rear suspension, larger front brakes and more horsepower. New standard features the Town Car comes equipped with include 16-inch wheels, leather seats and traction control. Available on the Signature model is the optional Signature Touring Sedan Package which includes perforated leather seats, interior Birdseye woodgrain, dual exhaust, upgraded tires and aluminum wheels. More new features include Premium cassette and electrochromic rearview/drivers side mirrors.
